How to Measure for blinds
Inside or Outside Mount?
The first decision that needs to be made before you measure your windows is whether you want to mount the blind on the inside or outside of the window frame.
Inside Mount
Blinds mounted on the inside of the window frame provide a clean, built-in look.
This emphasizes the actual size of your window while keeping your window molding fully visible.
Important: You need to ensure you have enough depth in your window to accommodate the headrail. Depending on the blind style, you typically need between 1" and 4" of depth.
Width
- Measure the exact window width at the top, middle, and bottom.
- Use the narrowest width. Do not make any deductions.
Height
- Measure the exact window height at the left, middle, and right side.
- Use the longest height. Do not make any deductions.
Outside Mount
Blinds mounted on the outside of the window frame create the illusion of a taller and wider window and can help conceal an unattractive window frame.
With an outside mount, blinds can be installed either directly on the window molding or above and beyond the molding.
Benefit: An outside mount always provides greater privacy and improved light control.
Width
Measure the exact width where the blind is to be placed. Add at least 6 inches total for overlap (3"–4" per side) for optimum light control and privacy.
Height
Measure the exact height from the top of the proposed headrail location to the base of the sill. If there is no sill, measure to where the blind is intended to reach. Add at least 4 inches for optimum light control or to your required height.
